I found Anela on the gram years ago and have been following since. Subscribed years ago and preordered the book (which I love so much). I’m a psychotherapist, artist, speaker, writer, and wifey who loves food, hiking and travel. Recently left the US to live in Costa Rica. That transition is gonna limit my travel budget for a bit which makes me whine when I see Anela’s trips being launched, but no regrets 🙂! Looking forward to the return of virtual events.

I'm Cherra. I finally made my way over to this new space. Long time follower of Anela and I guess I can be considered a Supper Club regular now. I'm a big fan of books, coffee shops, travel, and impulse buying my way into new hobbies.

If you've ever emailed Unfiltered & Fed, there's a pretty good chance we've already "met." I'm Anela's assistant but I am also one of her oldest friends! We've been causing trouble together for almost 20 years.

I help behind the scenes with all things Unfiltered & Fed—the emails, trip logistics, events, and pretty much whatever needs doing. I feel very lucky that I get to work alongside my best friend. I believe in the what she's building, and its awesome that I get to help bring her vision to life.

On top of my U&F work, I also work in the world of food & beverage. I have dedicated my life to bar culture and cocktail creation.

Some randoms facts about me:
-Live music is my happy place.

-I'm ALWAYS hungry, your girl can not turn down a good bite.

-If there's a cat in the room, please don't expect me to pay attention to anything else.

-I love gothic art, creepy aesthetics, and horror icons. Give me old cemeteries, vintage Halloween vibes, and spooky season all year long.

-I'll be joining travelers on Morocco South and Peru Departure 2 as part of my training, and I'm so excited to finally meet some of you in person!

I've been working on our annual update of the DC Black-owned restaurant guide, which means trying a lot of new places, and honestly it's been a mixed bag. Here's the candid version.

Isla is a Caribbean spot I'd say is fine dining based on the level of service, and it was fabulous. 10 out of 10 and I tried damn near the whole menu with my friend. The dishes were creative and pulled from a rich range of flavors, and I liked everything we had. Not one thing on that table was a miss for us. The cocktails were really good too. I'm already planning to go back with Bae for date night. Get the crab patties, the barra with goat, tbh get it all.

Port Royal is the new Jamaican place doing cocktails and tapas. Walking in, I thought the decor gave off an older-man vibe. I hate saying that, but it feels like an older man designed it. The bathroom is all black, walls and toilet paper included. The food was mid. Some of the flavors were off. The plantains were the saddest, driest plantains I've ever had and eating them hurt my spirit. Not sweet, not caramelized. The oxtail fried rice was solid, but it's fried rice with oxtail. How could it be bad? Patties I'd say could use some work, though I didn't hate them. Drinks were okay. It feels like a place still figuring out its direction, and they were playing pop-y house music while a room full of Black people ate Jamaican food. There are so many other genres. It just fell off. For me it's a no for now. I may try it again, but I'm not recommending it yet.

Kuro is the new listening bar in Park View, above Howard. Japanese The whiskey selection is solid. They have a vinyl selection playing (they call themselves a listening bar). Go here for a classic cocktail or something straightforward. The craft cocktails need work, the balance or sweet versus acid was off. Food was a mixed bag. You get free edmame when you sit down, mine was overcooked and had no flavor. But other dishes we ordered were good, though the mushroom pasta was too salty. With new restaurants, though, I fully expect it to take them a little while to work it out. For this one, I'd say my overall review would be a 6.5 out of 10, which means I will go back. It's also definitely designed to be more of a neighborhood hangout, which I enjoy.

One thing on Kuro. A friend went in a couple nights after me and said the team was playing R. Kelly and had Aaliyah queued up next and the man in charge didn't seem interested in feedback on that. Hospitality is driven by women as customers, and a Black-owned space is going to live or die on whether Black women feel comfortable in it. That's an odd choice. Do with that what you will.

I love curse words, and I am a fabulous shit talker.

At this point, I think I have over 30 tattoos, but I stopped counting years ago.

I am a night owl and usually go to bed around 2 a.m. because I find that the best creative work happens at night.

I get so embarrassed watching other people be embarrassed in movies that I have to cover my face. I've heard that there's a German term for this, but I never remember it.

I have found out that I can be a homebody when I have a home that I really like, which is what's happening to me right now in my new apartment. I could be in here for weeks, y'all!
